"Carb Talk"

Eating with diabetes does not mean purchasing "sugar-free" or "diabetic" foods. It means eating a healthy diet that includes a balance of carbohydrate, starches, sugars, protein and fat. At the center, we provide you with individualized guidelines from the nutritionist based upon your child's growth, development requirements and food preferences.

Carbohydrates are foods that provide a good energy source for the body because they are broken down into sugar. Children with diabetes need carbohydrates, but they must be eaten in balance with insulin.

Your child will have a meal plan that is based on the carbohydrate content of foods. Fifteen grams of carbohydrate is equivalent to one choice or one serving.

Eating For Kids with Type 1 Diabetes

We encourage our patients with type 1 diabetes to eat a healthy diet that includes a balance of carbohydrate, starches, sugars, protein and fat. People with type 1 diabetes do not have to only eat only "sugar-free" or "diabetic" foods. At the Berrie center, we provide individualized dietary guidelines based upon your child’s growth, development and food preferences. Children with diabetes can continue to eat carbohydrates, but they must be eaten in balance with insulin. Your child will have an individualized and flexible insulin regimen that is based on the carbohydrate content of foods that your child eats each day. We will teach you an approach called "carbohydrate counting."
