COVID-19: Important Message to Berrie Center Families

Dear Berrie Center Family:

We are very closely following and navigating the Coronavirus pandemic. Each day brings new information and guidelines. Things are continuing to evolve.

VIDEO-VISITS and OFFICE VISITS

We now have the ability to offer Video Visits. If you would like a visit on your phone rather than an in-person visit please call the office at 212-851-5494, or email your doctor to see if a Video Visit would work for you.

Please also note that per Columbia University Coronavirus Guidelines only one person can accompany a patient to their Berrie Center office visit. No siblings of pediatric patients are allowed.

GLUCOSE CONTROL

As always, we advise that you continue to work to keep your blood sugars in good control. This will help reduce the risk of complications should you become ill.

DKA PREVENTION

Any severe illness/infection increases the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), especially in those with type 1 diabetes. If you become sick, check blood glucose frequently, increase your insulin doses as needed, and stay well-hydrated. Do not stop your insulin even if you are eating very little or vomiting. Make sure you are stocked with both carbohydrate and non-carbohydrate containing beverages as well as non-perishable food at home.

SCHOOL AND WORK

We continue to advise that children follow their district’s guidelines for attending school; however we understand that is a personal decision. Please discuss with your doctor if you have diabetes and are concerned about going to work.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

It is advised for ALL people to maintain social distancing at this time. Thought should be given before traveling, especially if you are elderly or are traveling to visit elderly.

It is advised that people over the age of 65 years take additional precautions.

Please check the CDC guidelines and Columbia University Irving Medical Center guidelines regularly.
