Jacqueline Lonier, MD and Utpal Pajvani, MD, PhD
Named 2019 Ewig Scholars

Congratulations to Jacqueline Lonier, MD and Utpal Pajvani, MD, PhD who were named Ewig Scholars for 2019. The Ewig Clinical Education Fund allows the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) to support and reward a select group of outstanding educators each year. This year the awards were given in honor of Dr. Thomas Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs was an effective and empathic clinician; he was also a gifted educator. Dr. Jacobs spent his entire professional life as an endocrinologist at NewYork-Presbyterian and at CUIMC, where he was named the Roy and Diana Vagelos Professor of Medicine in 2018. Dr. Lonier and Dr. Pajvani were recognized for both the outstanding quality of their teaching efforts as well as their unstinting generosity to students, house staff and fellows.

“I was honored to win this award, because teaching students, residents and fellows is something I care very much about,” said Dr. Pajvani. “In addition, the awards this year are made in Tom Jacobs' name, who recently passed. Dr. Jacobs was a friend and role model for me. I hope to ably represent his love of teaching and perpetual optimism in the practice of medicine.”

Added Dr. Lonier, “Teaching is a joy of mine. It is incredibly meaningful to be recognized in this way, in honor of such a wonderful mentor.”
