2020 Russell Berrie Foundation Awards in Diabetes Research

This program is designed to support the mentored diabetes-related research activity of outstanding postdoctoral fellows for a period of up to two years.

The program will support postdoctoral scientists at up to $75,000 per year, for a maximum of two years (for a total of $150,000).  Start dates are in January 2021. A second year of funding may be available contingent upon progress made in the first year and other programmatic considerations.

All postdoctoral scientists are eligible to apply, to one of the following award mechanisms:

1) The Russell Berrie Foundation Fellow Award will be awarded to 2 post-doctoral scientists at Columbia University. Research projects can be laboratory-based or clinical, and can relate to causes, consequences or treatments of diabetes and allied disorders such as obesity.

2) The Russell Berrie Foundation Scholar Award will be awarded to 1 foreign (non-US citizen) post-doctoral scientist being recruited by any lab at Columbia University to engage in clinical or laboratory research in diabetes and allied disorders such as obesity. Ideally, this will be a prospective application for an outstanding recruit who would otherwise not be able to be hosted by a Columbia University lab due to ineligibility for most funding mechanisms, such as NIH-supported training grants.

3) The Russell Berrie Foundation Extramural Fellow Award will be awarded to 1 post-doctoral scientist outside of Columbia University as part of a NYC-wide competition for funding for Post-doctoral fellows engaged in clinical or laboratory research in diabetes and allied disorders such as obesity.

For all awards, applicants with a committed career path in diabetes and obesity research, as demonstrated by prior achievements, completed training, or special skills in novel and underrepresented research themes, will be given preference.  “High risk” studies, designed to test or extend novel concepts, are encouraged.

Please review the linked RFAs for further details. Applications are due to Dr. Utpal Pajvani by November 1, 2020.
