Berrie Center Patient Hits His Stride

In 2007, athlete Stephen England, an ultramarathon runner, was watching the New York City Marathon and had a life-changing epiphany. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1994 when he was 14, Stephen had struggled with his diagnosis over the years, never feeling he could compete at the same level that he had pre-diagnosis.

Study Finds Mechanism that Turns White Fat into Energy-Burning Brown Fat

Raises hopes for new obesity and diabetes treatments

New York, NY (August 2, 2012) — Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) researchers have identified a mechanism that can give energy-storing white fat some of the beneficial characteristics of energy-burning brown fat. The findings, based on studies of mice and of human fat tissue, could lead to new strategies for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes.
